Senior UX/UI Designer (Consultant)

Location: Hybrid as needed. All required travel will be included in the initial estimate for the agreed upon scope of work.

About Us

Mantis Ag Technology combines the power of innovative crop recognition software with a deep-rooted network of crop care experts and an understanding of production agriculture in the Salinas Valley and desert growing regions of California and Arizona. Powered by machine learning, our tractor-towed implements identify the value crop and simultaneously place targeted applications of fertilizer and pest control materials, while eliminating drift and greatly reducing material usage. Serving approximately 40% of direct seeded lettuce in the Salinas Valley and desert growing regions, Mantis continues to create economic incentives for growers and an environmental benefit to the public.

The Role

We’re looking for a senior-level UX/UI Designer to help take our process-control software to the next level of usability. Our applications are used by tractor operators in dynamic, outdoor environments—where dust, vibration, and lighting changes present unique design challenges. You’ll guide us in creating intuitive, efficient interfaces that work in these real-world conditions.

Our native desktop applications are built using Microsoft .NET and the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) control library. While not a development role, familiarity with WPF’s strengths and limitations will help you design solutions that developers can implement effectively.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience and education commensurate with a senior UX/UI designer
  • Strong understanding of UX principles and tools—and the judgment to know which to apply when
  • Ability to clearly explain and defend your design decisions
  • (Strongly preferred) Experience designing native desktop applications for industrial, agricultural, or manufacturing environments
  • (Preferred) Basic understanding of physics, mechanics, and electronics to support workflow insight

Work Arrangement & Compensation

This engagement is structured as a 1099 independent contractor agreement. The UI/UX Consultant shall operate as an independent contractor and not as an employee, agent, or legal representative of Mantis Ag Technology for any purpose. Accordingly:

  • Taxes and Withholding: The Consultant is solely responsible for all federal, state, and local taxes, including income tax, self-employment tax, Social Security, and Medicare contributions. Mantis Ag Technology will not withhold any taxes or provide employee benefits.
  • Compensation: The Consultant will be compensated at an agreed upon rate as detailed in the Statement of Work (SOW). Payment will be made within 15 days of invoice submission.
  • Invoices: Consultant shall submit itemized invoices on a bi-weekly basis. Invoices should include an itemized summary of hours worked and services provided, and any applicable agreed-upon expenses.
  • Duration: This is a project-based contract with an agreed upon timeline, unless otherwise extended or terminated in accordance with the agreement.
